Contested deletion
[edit]This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... (your reason here) --Yachty4000 (talk) 13:49, 16 January 2021 (UTC) This person is on wikicommon and wikifrench with media content so I am surprised this is being asked for deletion. I created this page as I was working on the parent article for the Vendee Globe. I can add more content but wanted to start it of as this generally leads to the page development by the community.
- "He is an offshore sailor and newspaper journalist" gives no indication of notability. --John B123 (talk) 15:42, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- The article's subject is already mentioned (and wikilinked) at Vendée Globe, and he has a long-standing article on the French Wikipedia. WP:A7 only applies to articles with no claims of importance whatsoever. It is a much lower standard than notability. --Un assiolo (talk) 16:42, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Un assiolo: What specifically in "He is an offshore sailor and newspaper journalist." is a credible claim of significance ? I don't want to hear about other articles or other languages or media which exists, I want you to tell me what in that quotation is a credible claim of significance. Merci bien. Nick (talk) 16:47, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- There are plenty of notable journalists, and even some notable sailors. I expect User:Yachty4000 will expand the article soon with content that will more clearly establish notability. (I cannot do anything in that regard as I do not speak French and I know nothing about the article's subject.)
- I don't mean to sound condescending (I realize you are an admin), but since two people have already disputed the speedy deletion, I think you should submit the article to AfD instead of speedily deleting it. This will also give User:Yachty4000 another week to improve the article. --Un assiolo (talk) 17:14, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Un assiolo:, as in your own words, you know nothing about the article's subject, I don't see how you can justify removing the speedy delete tag? As pointed out above, links from other articles and other language wikipedias are irrelevant. --John B123 (talk) 17:30, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- I know nothing except what is presented in this article, and what is presented in the article establishes a legitimate claim to importance, in my opinion. The very fact that several people are debating the article's merits shows that a speedy deletion is unsuitable, and the article should have a more thorough discussion at AfD. --Un assiolo (talk) 17:36, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- What in the article "establishes a legitimate claim to importance" (which isn't the text in the speedy deletion guidance, the phrase is credible claim of significance) ? There's more non-notable journalists than notable journalists and there's more non-notable sailors than notable sailors so claiming they're a journalist and sailor is not a credible claim of significance.
The suggestion of sending something to AfD whilst it's actively being expanded is an atrocious suggestion, and some of the shittiest advice I've seen on Wikipedia in a little while. What will happen is there will be a lot of delete votes in the first few hours, and then nothing will happen on the AfD for the remaining six days, by which time the article could be a Good Article candidate, but there would still consensus for deletion at the AfD, and off it disappears (probably to go through DRV and to be restored for a second AfD, by which time everybody will hate you for being bureaucrat).
The best advice right now is we move the article to Draft where @Yachty4000: can expand it, demonstrating notability in the process, and we move it back to mainspace later on.
In case you're wondering, if I genuinely didn't think Fabrice wasn't notable, I'd have deleted it hours ago. Not all admins are kind and considerate like me (you - stop laughing at the back). Nick (talk) 18:27, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

- If User:Yachty4000 agrees with draftifying it until it has been improved, that's fine with me. I was just concerned about WP:BITEing someone with speedy deletion tags placed on an article that really wasn't blatantly terrible, less than an hour after it was created. --Un assiolo (talk) 18:38, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Un assiolo: WP:BITE is in reference to newcomers, I'm not sure an editor with over 5,000 edits who has created over 200 articles could be classed as a newcomer. You might want to rerun your maths on "less than an hour". --John B123 (talk) 19:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- The article was created at 12:55 UTC and the tag was placed at 13:40. I believe 45 minutes is less than an hour. However, I will admit that I didn't check the user's edit count before deciding that we shouldn't arbitrarily delete their article. --Un assiolo (talk) 19:26, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Looks like it's me that needs the maths lesson. --John B123 (talk) 19:31, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

- I contest it deletion I have no idea why this article was suggested to be deleted the person is on wiki common and other wikipedia and the page was linked to this. To be honest this is the most frustrating thing about wikipedia. I was working on Vendee Globe main page which is the pinnacle/everest of offshore sailing and wanted to link to the sailor profiles that wiki franch and others already have. By creating these pages the community develop them. There are so many Olympians and other sport stars with worst pages than this which has an infobox, pictures and some profile. I admit it needs expanding. - Yachty4000 (talk) 00:01, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
@Yachty4000: The article was nominated for deletion because it gives no indication of Amedeo's notability. If he is notable as you suggest, then that notability needs to be added to the page. As the creator of the article, the onus is on you to demonstrate notability, not expect somebody else to do it. --John B123 (talk) 08:37, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- I must thank Nick for contribution. This person is on wikicommon there is an in depth article on wikifrance I suspect a French sailor and editor will significantly expand this article like I have to the international competitors and started of the French sailors pages linking the wikipedia databases. This sailor has completed the Vendee Globe and this article is linked to it and states it. More people have been to space than sailed round the world none stop this is the Everest of sailing so he deserves a wikipedia page and any review will come to that consensus I am confident of that.
- I thought I would leave my sport alone but you only have to look at 50% of these Category:French_male_rowers profiles to realize that singling out of this contribution is strange and put of people contributing to wikipedia. - Yachty4000 (talk) 20:02, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
